1. Acrylic Paint Works Great

Acrylic paint is perfect for wood DIY projects like this Gingerbread House. It is affordable, easy to use and dries quickly. On the one in the photo I used brown, red, white, turquoise, yellow and silver on the snowflakes. If you are looking for a colorful set of Acrylic Paints, check out this one that has 18 different colors at a great price point - Apple Barrel Acrylic Craft Paint Collection. Bonus Tip #1: Small sponge brushes work good for bigger pieces, fine tip paint brushes work great for small details and make-up sponges work great for dabbing a small amount of paint onto and painting the smaller pieces.

Bonus Tip #2: Tape down a strip of painter's tape, sticky side up, to help hold down smaller pieces while you paint them.

2. Use a Baby Wipe for a Stain Effect

Want a warm, stained look without the smell and mess of traditional wood stain? Here’s an easy hack:

  • Mix a small amount of brown acrylic paint with water to create a thin, watery consistency.
  • Dip a baby wipe into the mixture and gently rub it over the wood surface.
  • Repeat until you achieve the desired shade.

Why this works: The baby wipe spreads the paint evenly and controls the depth of color, creating a natural-looking stain without fumes.

3. Add Colorful Dots with Q-Tips

For smaller details like the dots along the roof line, us Q-tips:

  • Dip the tip of a Q-tip into the paint.
  • Lightly press and twist onto the wood surface to create round dots.
  • Easy to add multiple colors and throw away when finished.

 4. Sealing (optional)

  • Sealing: This step is optional - once your Wood Gingerbread House is complete and the paint is dry, apply a light coat of clear acrylic sealer to protect your work and add a polished touch. I like using Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover Spray Paint, Satin Clear. (This is an Amazon Affiliate link. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.)

Now Time to Assemble!

I find it easiest to start by snapping together the four sides of the house and then attaching it to the base. Next, snap on the roof and secure the Gingerbread boy and girl into the slots at the front of the house. Once the house is assembled, you are ready to glue on the windows and door. Then, have fun deciding where to place the rest of your pieces—lollipops, gumdrops, candy canes and snowflakes! Any type of glue that dries clear and has a small tip works good.

I hope this has inspired you to grab a kit or two or three and create your own special Christmas memories!
